But there was one who did not fear him: there was one
prepared to enter that circle .. .
. . . which will win?…

Putting this combination together is like pairing Merlin and Macbeth to stir a potion of “eye of newt, and toe of frog, wool of bat, and tongue of dog.” It’s a baffling blend of personalities, as much so to the two Scorpions themselves as to those who watch the contests between them – and oh, there will be contests! You can bet your wool of bat there will be.

Each is cautiously and suspiciously aware of the other’s unleashed power, even though both are overjoyed to have finally found someone who really understands them (if “overjoyed” is a word that can be used to describe a reaction from these two poker faces). Just so the understanding isn’t carried too far. It’s a difficult thing to desire to be understood yet simultaneously and inexplicably be unwilling to allow the one who understands you best to know your innermost secrets. This creates a human pysche game that’s thrilling to watch as long as you’re on the outside looking in and not personally involved.

I’m pleased that they’ve found each other, aren’t you? But it’s disturbing to think of what might occur if one should happen to offend the other – and the offended one decides to get even – then the recipient of the revenge decides to get-even-back – then the first one is compelled to top the revenge action of the second one – and by the time the getting even has become an actual contest . . . one shudders to image the scene. The thing is that Scorpios must win. They’ll risk anything to win, short of their lives, and some of them will do even that.

If you happen to know a couple of Scorps at the office, in the classroom, in the family circle next door – or down the street (whether children or adults), you’ll think I’m making a big mishagosh about nothing. You say they are mild, law-abiding citizens, quiet sorts, soft-spoken, certainly not dangerous or sinister, and as far as you can tell, not dedicated with fury to winning anything? I see. Hmmmm. How well do you know them?

You have to be married to a Scorpio, or be a blood relative of one, to really know him – or her. Everyone else receives only the image of the Halloween mask any particular Scorpio has decided to wear to cover Pluto’s secret nature. You might start with asking their mothers if they were sweet, quiet, soft-spoken little angels when they were growing up. Go ahead, ask. Ask actress TerryAnne Moore about her Scorpio son, Grant – how “gentle” he is. (She also has a Leo son, Stuart, but we’re not dealing with Lions here – we’re in a different part of the zoo. I just didn’t want to ignore the Lion, because ignoring Leo is as risky as underestimating a Scorpion.) As a matter of fact, you can even ask me. I have a Scorpio son myself, Michael.

A New York bank recently made the mistake of refusing to allow Mike to open a checking account because he “wasn’t old enough.” That did it, for all time. He’s finished with banks for life. They simply do not exist for him. He is (quite seriously and literally) shopping around for a safe with a combination lock in which to keep his cash in the future. The banks didn’t want him? Fine. Then he has no use for them – now – or ever. That’s the way it is, and don’t try to seduce him with Christmas Club bonus gifts of electric blankets and egg beaters. When an Eagle has been rejected, he won’t forget. Remember that, all you banks. He may possibly give the Colorado Springs National Bank a chance someday, because they’ve been fair and square with his mother, but they’ll have to solicit him with respectful caution if they want his business.

A Scorpio, male or female, adult or child, has a long memory. Only Taurus remembers longer. Eagles are quietly outraged when they learn of an injustice suffered by a friend or family member, and they’ll attempt (attempt?) to see to it that it’s not repeated, with a sort of calm “Godfather” undertone. Here’s an important meditation exercise for Scorpios (and for all those who deal with them). There are two particular individuals I’m thinking of who have the reputation of successfully attaining their goals by never losing their tempers, consistently remaining cool, poised and collected, and always speaking with a soft voice. A Mafia Godfather. And Jesus, the carpenter. That Great Truth is worth hours of contemplation. Any Eagle understands the message. The key is in the phrase “attaining their goals.”

When an injustice is committed against Scorpio himself (or herself), retribution is even more certain. It need not be the next moment. As a Water Sign, Scorpio is willing to wait. These people don’t need, always, to seek revenge in a tangible way. Just wishing or willing it on a subconscious level often causes it to occur for those ruled by the awesome planet Pluto – also ruler of the underworld, birth, death, the mysteries of sex, reincarnation and regeneration. You can imagine what happens when one Scorpio becomes angry with another. If you can’t imagine, I’ll tell you. What happens is they’ll both learn fast that “getting even” is The Big Boomerang, especially when it’s directed against another Pluto person. Negative actions and words inevitably return to the sender, through a law of the Universe not even Scorpio can alter or cancel.

Those times when Scorpio does not seek to even the score, he or she will, at the very least, take care to avoid in the future the person who’s caused the unkindness, as if that person didn’t exist, until the guilty party begins to feel nervous, not real. He’s not, to Scorpio. What the Eagles do not respect, they ignore, with an all-encompassing disdain. It makes the victim want to pinch himself (or herself) to be sure of not being a ghost. Did you ever have a Scorpio stare through you, as one stares through a glass window? It’s different, some-how even more chilling than when they stare into you. There’s a decided difference, and the latter is preferable. Once these people have lost faith, it’s not an easy thing to earn back their trust and confidence. Yet when one Scorpio has injured another, confidence and trust will usually be restored more quickly. There’s more compassion and forgiveness between them than either will ever grant to those outside their Pluto serpent-circle, with the occasional exception of Pisces and Cancer. My literary agent and my editor both being Scorps, PLUS my production editor and my designer at Harper & Row, you can understand that I usually – not always but usually – tread carefully.

All dangers of a clash of wills aside, Scorpio and Scorpio can accomplish many marvels together, considering the immense force resulting from the combining of their latent energies – anything from causing a savings account to grow large enough to purchase their dream home, near the water – producing an award-winning film – to saving the baby seals in Newfoundland from being butchered before their mothers’ eyes. Do you happen to know two Scorpions who aren’t busy? There’s a sad, sick world out there that needs them. Of course, first they’ll have to overcome the tendency of all 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern associations to exaggerate the negative qualities of their mutual characteristics. It requires consistent, concerted effort, but if they can cope with keeping this under control, their achievements as a team or a unit can be impressive.

When two Scorps set their minds to anything, be it negative or positive, detouring them from their path would be like – oh, I don’t know what it would be like – I guess like attempting any other impossible task. Not like landing on Mars. That’s possible. Not like parting the Red Sea or walking on the water. They’re possible. Like .. well, like expecting not to become wet when standing in a downpour of rain. How’s that for an example of an “impossible” feat? I had to work on it. So few things are really impossible when the Keys of the Kingdom have been found by two Scorpions. Even remaining dry in a cloudburst, perhaps, is then possible – but for now it will suffice as an illustration.

You might have received the impression I’m afraid of Scorpios. Me? An Aries, ruled by Mars, afraid of Pluto? Or, in Nature-talk, a sturdy Ram afraid of such a simple creature as the Scorpion? To be candid, yes – I am. I’m Fire, Scorpio is Water. As explained elsewhere in this book, Fire is aware that Water can put out its flame. And so, yes. I fear the power of Pluto in Scorpio people. I fear them, but I also respect them – and respect wins over fear every time. I’ve never yet met a Scorpio who really stung me – who hasn’t demonstrated the Eagle’s steadfast loyalty and support when I’ve needed it. Some of them have been quiet (deceptively quiet) and helpful friends, who have treated me gently. A few have amazed me with their intensity of purpose and strength during periods of soul testing in their personal lives – and almost every one I’ve known has been deeply compassionate when my own spirit has been troubled.

If the two Scorps who are skipping along a sandy beach together in this incarnation share a harmonious Sun-Moon aspect between their nativities, they just might part the Red Sea themselves. It’s been done once, why not again? Or perhaps two Scorpios could aspire to somehow prevent the cataclysm predicted for the West Coast, which may be approaching within the next decade, but which can be stopped. One way that’s been suggested to halt the Earth tremors is through the cessation of nuclear and hydrogen testing beneath the ground. Another way is to speak out against the reign of sexual excesses and financial greed so highly concentrated in California. The planet Pluto governs both the negative and the positive aspects of sex, and is soon to re-enter its own sign of Scorpio, which rules the deeper mysteries of religion. Maybe that’s why Scorpio Billy Graham is working on the angle of “speaking out” the truth, as he sees it personally. Since he doesn’t believe in astrology, he doesn’t know why he’s so obsessed, so compelled, so intensely determined to win his “battle for souls.” But we know why, don’t we?

The proud Eagle type of Scorpio scorns the meanness and pettiness of revenge, which is sometimes resorted to by the lower-evolved Grey Lizards of this  Sun Sign .. . yet even these can rise, like their own symbolic Phoenix, into their full birthright, at any time they choose to do so.

When Pluto power is contained within two ordinary mortals, if both are Grey Lizards, the pitfalls are many. If one is a Grey Lizard type Scorpio, the other an Eagle – the latter has the power and the glory to raise up the “fallen angel” in the former, and this has occurred many times. I’ve personally observed several occurrences of this sort of miracle, and it’s a thrilling kind of magic to see. If both individuals are the evolved Scorpion Eagles, then the heights to which they can fly together cannot be measured. If the harmonious relationship of other mutual planets, especially the Moon, is added to their combined vibration, the influence for great good will be greatly increased. An inspirational and grand friendship or business association may result – an awesome and powerful love affair or marriage may be realized – or a historic spiritual mission on the Earth may be accomplished.

To the two Scorpios reading this: Remember that your ruling planet, Pluto, contains all the power you need to build happiness into a tower, or to destroy happiness with the energy force of a nuclear blast. Whether or not you call upon it, such power of will is yours. Used wisely, there is, literally, nothing you dream that cannot manifest for you. Not in the “hereafter,” but in the Here and Now.
