“They were going round and round the island, but they did
not meet because all were going at the same rate.”

Before we get tied into mental pretzel knots, trying to analyze this 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern association, let’s get the arithmetic straightened out. A Gemini and a Gemini equals a group of four bright, active people (two sets of Twins) tossing ideas, dreams and challenges back and forth between themselves and the world at large.

They may occasionally block each other’s view of life, because they tend to see it in different magnifications, through the wide-angle zoom lens of their Mercurial vision, and sometimes they walk or run at varying speeds. Yet, in one sense, they all four travel at the same rate of speed, in that they all understand one another’s need for freedom. Their vibrations radiate from the same frequencies, and their broken rhythms are usually in tune. A broken rhythm may not be orthodox music, but it makes great jazz. The trouble is, while they’re jazzing around, they might miss each other in the swiftly passing scenery.

When two Geminis merge and get their vibes, rhythms and mental perspectives working in a parenthetic pattern, the four of them can use each other as a reassuring tie to reality. From the home base of their mutual empathy, they can run out and seduce the world – return briefly to be understood – then set forth
once again on a new mental seduction. Do you understand this page? If you do, you’re a Gemini yourself, because it’s all astrologically accurate but complicated
Mercury double-talk. If you don’t understand it, and you’re reading this to learn to comprehend a Gemini team, partnership or couple you know, stay with
us, but be prepared to exercise your mental muscles – and don’t forget your parachute.

Philosopher-astrologer Alan Watts defined “Man” (he didn’t include women, but that was before ERA made all male animals aware that we’re people too) by explaining that the individualization of the Creator, expressing His total Being through the multiple millions of souls on Earth, can be conceived of as “God, playing hide-and-seek with Himself.” It’s long been my favorite esoteric definition of Man and Woman’s relation to the Universe, since I’ve always suspected that Man and Woman and their co-Creators are a unity, after pondering the Genesis riddle that the latter created the former in Their own Image. However, I really must correct one flaw in this otherwise very deeply perceptive definition.

I’m sure the late, both kindly and brilliant Alan Watts will forgive us if we re-phrase his words as: “God and His Mate, playing hide-and-seek with Themselves.” Now it is perfect. But anyway, the point I was trying to make is that, in the case of Gemini, our co-Creators are playing hide-and-seek with Themselves at high speed, with many more hiding places, and probably surprising Themselves more than They do with ordinary mortals, who are confused enough with the challenges of being just one person. There is, of course, another side to all this, the individual side, and the integrity of each unique soul.

The Yogi-Buddhist Nirvana concept is grossly distorted. All this business of permanent “blending with the Great All” is nonsense, metaphysically unsound, and quite literally impossible. We are part of both the fused and the separate bodies of our co-Creators – in a symbolic sense, Aries people being near Their “heads,” Gemini being near Their arms, hands and fingers, Leos near Their “hearts,” and so forth. (That’s admittedly an oversimplification, but will suffice for this particular book, because it will be covered in more detail in a forthcoming one.) Now, a nose is not a mouth (when did you ever hear of a nose that ate corn on the cob?), nor is an eye a hand, nor is an ear a heart. (Who ever heard of an ear-beat? ) In other words, you are You. The unique you-of-you is now, ever has been, and ever shall be – your individual self, and consciously so – not just during those periods of time when your blindness separates you from our co-Creators, but also after you blend with Them, from time to time, and even while you’re at one with Them.

The secret of the latter condition of perfect peace, wisdom, and power is contained in the polarity of power – humility – expressed through the word “atone” (at-one). Not until you truly atone, and fully comprehend the meaning of the word, may you be at-one with God and His Mate. However, although the achievement of experiencing such at-one-ment, periodically and repeatedly, is a glorious thing, you need not (indeed you should not) remain at-one with Them on a permanent basis. That would be dreadfully boring for the individuality, just as being inseparably blended in the ecstatic embrace of sexual union, however pure the love between the twin souls might be, would be dull and boring if
it were to be an eternal, constant state.

Such a concept removes the very core of existence, which is light and shadow .. . the perfect Libran balance of each .. . the stimulation of controversy,
equally balanced with peaceful agreement – with no murders please, within the
necessary controversy syndrome – no murder of sex, people, animals, or anything else. That’s against all the rules of the cosmic hide-and-seek game.

Well, let’s see .. . I began discussing Man’s and Woman’s relationship with God and His Mate, then went on to an explanation of your individuality, so you’ll all be aware that your own sacred and holy, personal “egos” can never be destroyed by blending in a nirvanic forever with anyone’s concept of “God” – all in a few paragraphs. The Gemini essence is extremely contagious. Actually, I’ll level with you, although my remarks were all made quite seriously, and are reflective of ancient esoteric truth, I deliberately strung my words together on a chain of quick subject changes – each different, yet all consistently leading into one another – to give you a brief idea of the necessity for remaining alert when you’re involved in any sort of discussion with a Gemini, let alone two of them, which is really four of them.

You see, sometimes Gemini double-talk is an aid to superimposing two apparently polarized opinions into a stereoscopic wholeness of third-dimensional depth, the third dimension added by the perceptive recipient of the words. Are you with me? You’re simply going to have to become accustomed to word games if you expect to play verbal Pong-Ping with the Twins, and Pong-Ping is the same as Ping-Pong when you’re gazing into the Gemini mirror. Now, is it reflecting back to you more clearly?

Each Gemini contains a twin mirror image of himself (or herself), in reverse, the positive and negative poles of his or her personality. This is because each Gemini symbolizes the soul, on its trip around the astrological, karmic wheel, experiencing the toddler stage of awareness that it’s not alone in the Universe, realizing also that there are two distinct sides to the character of each man and woman, which must be brought into harmony before it’s possible to relate to others. The trouble is, Gemini seldom knows which of his (or her) split personalities is the real one. If anyone asked (or if our co-Creators asked this portion of Their individualization), “Will the real Twin please stand up and be recognized?”, two separate people would pop up, and the game of hide-andseek would begin all over again.

Naturally, then, when a pair of Twins decide to tangle their temperaments, things can get pretty crisscrossed. There are few Geminians who can sort themselves out from the myriad disguises and conflicting desires of their natures. Gemini is ruled by trickster Mercury, the planet of lightning speed (though not quite as capable of speed as “Swifty” Uranus), who forces this man, woman or child to try on a thousand faces, then discard them, in a restive search for personal identity.

The purpose of the masquerade is what separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and Scorpio from Gemini – in case you’ve been wondering. Scorp changes false faces for an entirely different purpose – to deliberately keep you in the dark, whereas Gemini is just trying to make up his (or her) mind which face belongs there. No, that’s Libra indecision. Let’s try again. Gemini is trying on masks in an effort to find the true person he or she really is. Indecision has nothing to do with it, in a really detailed analysis. Did I already say that? Yes, I did. I just realized. I said the same thing at the end of the last sentence in the previous paragraph.
Well, get used to it. Geminis often repeat themselves – say things twice. Like, they’ll say: “What time is it? ” .. . wait a second or so, and repeat: “What time is it?” before you’ve had time to answer that it’s half past anything or a quarter till, which makes it difficult to converse with them in any sort of synchronized way, sometimes. But not always.

Since Gemini is a mental Air Sign, these people are driven to spinning their brains almost continually, even in their sleep, thinking, theorizing, figuring, projecting, condemning, endorsing, discarding, sorting and analyzing the cold, hard facts – at the very same time that they’re chasing their visionary dream. You can see why they’re all human jigsaw puzzles.

The Mercury-ruled roam the world, either mentally or physically, or both, in search of an elusive ideal of perfect truth and happiness, then often return home again, to listen to a bird singing in a tall tree – the same bird, the same song, the same tree they knew as children. After traveling all over the mental continents of their imaginations, they sometimes, if they’re lucky, realize, at last, that their truest dreams were dreamed when childhood’s perception was clear and uncontaminated by adult logic and cynicism.
Any 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern combination brings with it the special and unique satisfaction of association with a person enough like one’s own self that there’s little fear of rejection of personality – although there’s always a danger of an overbalance of the similar characteristics. A double-Gemini relationship is especially comforting to each of the four of them, because it’s always reassuring to have a pal, relative, neighbor, business associate, lover or mate who’s as messed up as you are yourself. It saves a lot of tiresome explanations and apologies. But it can also be wearing on the nervous system, because of the continual frustration of attempting to fool someone who anticipates all your maneuvers and rationalizations.

At least these Sun Signs, when doubled up, can recognize one another somewhat more easily than an outsider would recognize either of the four of them. Yesterday, Gemini was a gentle soul, shy and self-effacing, somewhat detached, quiet and reflective, with occasional spells of wistfulness and longing. Today, the very same Gemini is cynical, sarcastic, irritable, insulting – and acutely alert. Tomorrow, he (or she) may be calm, steady and conservative to the point of being downright stuffy. Then, without the faintest warning, Gemini will turn into a will-o’-the-wisp, sprinkling dreams like lemon drops, scattering ideas like confetti, restless, yearning, as physically active as he (or she) is verbally communicative and emotionally restless. It’s terribly puzzling to the rest of us, but
even more so to the Gemini himself – or herself. Especially if he (or she) is involved in a close tie with another Gemini. Then, of course, the puzzlement is
twinned and twice as tormenting.

The trickster aspect of Gemini’s ruling planet, Mercury, is always hiding behind the sharp Gemini intellect, revealing itself in all manner of minor and major ways. An excellent example is Gemini Bob Hope, the comedian with the rapid-fire, speedy delivery of jokes, which nearly tumble over one another in the telling, they’re delivered in such machine-gun style. Did you ever pay really close attention to one of Hope’s longer comic routines? The kind where he does a monologue for fifteen minutes or a half hour, not his on-again, off-again stabs at the audience at the Academy Awards. On a lengthier routine, Mercury’s delight in tricking and fooling people is very evident.

Approximately every two minutes or so, the Gemini Hope will make a remark that when analyzed, means essentially: “Get ready, Folks. I’m about to close my act, and sign off.” But then he continues. A couple of minutes (or even one minute or a few seconds) later he tosses out another one-liner, indicating again that his routine is coming to a close. Yet, he continues. Listen closely next time. You’ll see that this is a consistent pattern with Bob Hope’s Gemini comedy patter. Mercury drives him to try to trick his audience repeatedly – which is rather astute of Mercury, because it makes Hope’s listeners pay strict attention, being led, as they are, to believe that each joke is his last for the night.

Bob Hope’s reputation for possessing the finest comedy timing in show business is deserved, a talent that’s directly inherited from the influence of his Sun ruler, Mercury. Comedienne Bea Lillie’s repartee is equally sharp and staccato, her sense of comedy timing as exquisite as Hope’s. Both born in England, Bea and Bob have startlingly similar noses, both are famed for entertaining the troops – and both were born the same month, day, year, latitude and longitude, within a few minutes of one another. Astral twins. More about that in a future book.

A blend of Gemini and Gemini has the advantage of creating an atmosphere of freedom of thought and movement, so that their combined intellects can click into action unhampered by petty jealousies, suspicions and restrictions (allowing, as always, for a more conservative Moon Sign or Ascendent). Even then, the emotional climate between them will be comparatively free and easy, allowing them to accomplish lots of tricks and capture many a dream together. These two will sharpen their wits on one another, usually forgive and forget quickly and boredom will rarely be a problem.

But there are also disadvantages to their association, which they’ll have to face, and find a way to erase, between them. Lacking the stability of the more prosaic, less complicated Sun Signs, Gemini and Gemini can tempt each other to scatter their talents to the four winds, neither one willing to hold down the other or able to provide the necessary patience and dependability for success, either on an emotional or on a material level. They may remind their friends of two brightly colored balloons, filled with a blend of happy helium and hot air, having a gay and marvelous time floating through the clouds, but not going anywhere in particular. With this combination, their Moon Signs will write the ending to the story. If the Moon Sign in either birth chart is unfavorable in aspect to the Gemini Sun Sign of the other, they can create lovely poetry or jazz, paint the clouds silver, or paint the town red. But few of their dreams and schemes will take off, or if they do, there could be a crash landing. Or, their balloons might take off too fast, then fly away out of sight, because they weren’t grounded. They can still make it all work out harmoniously, but in order to do so, they’ll have to be more cautious and less casual.

With a favorable Luminary aspect between their Suns and Moons, however, the sky is truly the limit for creative breakthroughs, scientific discovery, intellectual attainment, material security – and even spiritual perception. As for emotional happiness and harmony, well… it’s really their own choice. Geminis manufacture their own emotions to sell, keep or give away. What do these Mercury Birds seek on the wind out there? Whatever it is, it’s something beyond what is visible and tangible. One Gemini might ask the other, but the answers they get will be exactly the same as if the Twins had asked themselves.

GEMINI: What is it you’re looking for?
GEMINI: I’m not sure. But when I find it, I’ll know what it is.
GEMINI: And just where do you think you’ll find it?
GEMINI: Where? Why, most anywhere, I guess … .

And yet, too often, the last place the Twins will look is in their own backyards, where the miracle they’re searching for may have been waiting all the
time.

Author’s Gemini Postscript:
Because it has not yet been corrected in any current or pasteditions of my first book, SUN SIGNS, I would like to say that the mention of Marilyn Monroe in the Gemini Woman section of that book was intended to be an accurate description of Marilyn’s Gemini Ascendent and her natal Mars-in-Gemini. Certain investigation has indicated that Marilyn was actually born a Sun Sign Aries. Birth certificates are not always infallible sources of information, as any professional astrologer well knows.
